- Itinerary: This schooner sails the southern tip of South America
and southern oceans. There are 7 and 14-day voyages from Puerto Williams in
the Tierra del Fuego area of Chile to Cape Horn and Antarctica from October
through April. There are South Georgia expeditions starting in October, and
Antarctic expeditions start in December. A Dec. 31 voyage goes for 35 days
through Beagle Channel across the Drake Passage via Cape Horn for three weeks
in Antarctica.
- Cabins: 6. There are three double cabins plus three single Pullman
bunks. All cabins have opening hatches or portholes. Two heads and one shower
are shared. Showers are limited, with water limited to that carried in the
tanks.
Facilities and Activities: This is a schooner, a replica of an 1870
Maine cargo schooner, and only for adventurers since there are very few
amenities. This was the ship used in the documentary "Beagle" about
Darwin's
voyages. Passengers are expected to help with sails, take the wheel, learn to
use instruments, or watch for humpback whales. (No nautical experience is
required.) The ship explores glacier regions and fjords. Passengers visit the
Cape Horn coast guard station, visit research stations in Antarctica and climb
glaciers. Some passengers hike to beaver dams on Isla Navarino, mountain climb
or do scuba ice diving. Before the voyage in Puerto Williams passengers visit
an ancient Indian settlement, hike or go trout fishing. There is a VCR, a
wood-burning stove, zodiac inflatable, and a two-person sailing dingy/rowboat.
E-mail, telephone and fax are available on board. The crew on board speak
mostly Spanish. Victory also has air flights to Antarctica and 10 steel and
aluminum yachts that that carry 4-11 passengers and go to Antarctica for one
month voyages from Puerto Williams, Chile, or Ushuaia, Argentina.
Typical Fares: Fares are $195 to $300/day/passenger. There is a 15%
discount for family of three. Packages can be arranged for Torres Del Paine
National Park near Punta Arenas.
