SELF-DRIVE CRUISERS

If you like to be totally independent, or want to spend less money, a good option is a Self-Drive Cruiser. Although you also can self-skipper narrowboats and some barges, the term self-drive usually refers to cabin cruisers. They can be found on many canals and waterways. The boats accommodate 2 to 12 people, have private cabins and bathrooms, and come equipped with full kitchens, linens, navigation charts and maps. You get instructions on handling and rules of the road when you pick up the boat -- no experience or license is necessary. The boats are simple to operate and have a maximum cruising speed of 5 miles per hour. You can bring your own groceries, have them provisioned for you, or simply eat in taverns in villages along the way. It's great for families, and sometimes you are even allowed to bring a pet.

You can reserve a self-drive boat on the canals and waterways of France, England, Wales, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Holland. Prices are less in the spring and fall and more in June, July and August. Bicycles are often extra. There is usually a discount when booking two weeks.

Two of the major companies are European Boating Holidays with Europa cruisers and Locaboat penichettes, and Le Boat formed by the merger of Crown Blue Line, Connoisseur and Emerald Star companies.
