- Itinerary:
5-day voyages on the Trent-Severn
Waterway, St. Lawrence River and Rideau Canal (Ontario, Canada)
from mid-May until mid-October. All cruises are one way by ship with a
return
by highway coach. Cruise itineraries are between
Peterborough and Big Chute, between Peterborough and Kingston, and between Kingston and Ottawa. The ship traverses
from 125 to 160 miles on the cruises and goes through 19 to 37 locks,
including hydraulic lift locks built in the early 1900s. The bus takes
you back to the start of your itinerary.
- Cabins: 23. Cabins are all
outside. They are small and basic, with open shelves, pipe racks for hanging
clothes and a curtained-off sink and toilet. All but one cabin have twin lower
berths and have
toilet, vanity sink, heat and air conditioning, showers down the
hall. Passengers
care for their own cabins.
- Dress: Very casual
- Dining: There is an open-seating
dining room amidships with one seating. Menus are old-fashioned farm-cooking.
Bran muffins, banana bread, pies and English trifle are all baked on
board. Non-alcoholic drinks are complimentary.
- Facilities and Activities: There
is an observation lounge forward. A top deck runs the
length of the boat with a shaded area. This is a slow-paced scenic cruise with mostly retired passengers
from the US and Canada. There are shore excursions and wildlife lectures. Evening entertainment is low-key: cards, games, videos
and reading. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the boat. The cruise
centers around the history of the canals built in the early 1800’s
and the scenery. The ship library has a collection of books on the history of
the canal and local pioneer days. The canals are operated by the Canadian
Parks Service to preserve the canal’s natural and historic features. Many of
the lock gates are hand-operated. Passengers explore small towns
along the rivers and canals. The ship ties up at night, usually by a park.
Open bridge.
