windows forward and on both sides for sheltered viewing although most people
like to be out on the forward or top decks. On promenade deck, 14 laps equal
a mile. Naturalists and historians accompany the cruises. A typical evening
features a recap of who has seen what, a talk or slide show on the next
day’s activities.
There may be wine-tasting when exploring the coast of California, in Alaska
a native artist demonstrates wood-carving and drum-making, or local musicians
may come aboard to play music of the region. Motorized landing craft are
used for landing on small islands
and beaches. A shore day might include swimming, snorkeling, a hike
in a nature preserve, making rubbings of petroglyphs or watching native folk
dances. A favorite excursion -- going by dugout canoe up the Sambu River and
visiting the Choco Indians at their village in the Darien Jungle and being
entertained with dancing to flute and drum music and seeing fine carvings
and basketry. (Shirley has a frog carved from a rare jungle wood worthy of
being in the Museum of Modern Art.)
An optional flightseeing excursion goes through Devil’s Canyon to Angel Falls,
the world’s highest waterfall.
